There are two main categories of injectables: fillers and neuromodulators. Fillers do what their name implies. They fill soft tissue. They can be used to soften small to medium sized static wrinkles. They also have value in reducing concavities in in areas such as the tear trough and nasolabial fold. They also can be used to add volume to the lips. Restylane and Juvaderm are the most well know of the fillers. These are hyleronate gels that are injected with fine needles under the skin. Botox is the most well know of the neuromodulators. These substances are well suited to treating dine to moderate sized dynamic wrinkles. Neumodulators work by precisely intercepting the nerve signals sent to specific muscles when injected into key areas in the face. Following blockages of the signal the muscles affected are weakened and don’t contract or contract less and thus cause less wrinkling of the overlying skin.
